Native of Oklahoma. Raised by a family of music teachers. Can you share a memory growing up and singing with your family at a holiday celebration?
At my grandmother’s house in western Oklahoma, my siblings and I would sing Christmas songs with the rest of our family. My grandmother was a music teacher and she taught me so many beautiful songs growing up. She still influences my music today.
Influenced by your father, he would say, “you’re only as good as your word.” And what’s been the best advice your mother shared that helps you through challenging times?
He would say “You’re only as good as your word.” This has been something I live by and has really allowed me to hold myself to a certain standard, while ensuring those around me to do the same.
My mother was very wise, and always had the perfect things to tell me, but her best advice was, “Prevention is the best medicine.” I love this quote because it makes me think about the impact my actions have on others.
Worked as an account executive for iHeart Media and Cumulus. How does the business of music affect the songs you write?
Being in the industry, I just fell in love with country music more and more — country music fans are unmatched in their loyalty and love for the genre. This really inspires me to make a connection with my listeners, and it brings a new level of passion for my projects.
Merle Haggard produced debut album, Introducing Amy Jack. You covered his “Got Lonely Too Early” on the record. If you were to record an album of country classics, which other songs would be on it?
Such a tough question but it would have to be “Help Me Make It Through The Night” by Sammi Smith.
Sports inspired songwriting. “For The Love Of The Game,” “Shake And Bake,” “Born To Lead.” What drives you to write about sports?
My dad helped me develop my love for sports. He always had the TV on playing football on the weekends. He always looked forward to watching his games, and his motto would be, “I worked all week for this.” That was such an inspiring quote for me, knowing that games meant that much to fans, so as I grew to love sports more and more, I decided to make a song about the love of the game for sports lovers.
You currently live in the Dallas Fort Worth area in north Texas. Which local music venues do you like to take friends and family to when they come to visit?
Poor David’s Pub in Dallas and Billy Bob’s are always a great time, and they usually have live shows on weekends.
“Stay Breezy Baby.” Counterweight to “day in and day out” stress and pedestrian life events, in the vein of Jimmy Buffet. “When I wrote “Stay Breezy Baby” the inspiration actually came from a girl walking out of 7/11 with “Stay Breezy” written across her shirt!” What makes this song so special for you?
Stress is a killer, and I don’t know anyone that doesn’t have stress right now, whether it’s health, relationships, family, work or anything in-between. So “Stay Breezy Baby” is a three-word mantra that I connect to, and it has really helped me manage stress, so I wanted to share it with listeners in hopes that it will allow others to relieve stress.
Ice cream, sunflowers, and sunshine. Birds Of Paradise, Beautiful Earth. What songs would you add to a summertime playlist?
I’d say “Summer Breeze,” “Walking On Sunshine,” “Seasons In The Sun,” “His Name was Terry Jacks,” “Afternoon Delight,” “Margaritaville,” “Soak Up The Sun,” “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay,” and “Escape — The Pina Colada Song.”
Seagulls, toes in the sand, sailboats, and the ocean, parasailing. Favorite beach to write song?
We wrote several of my songs in LA at a certain pool cabana, and I figured I would enjoy it, I’d stay breezy regardless of the outcome. But I was happy with all the songs. Although it isn’t the ocean, I’d say writing by the water is so soothing and inspirational.
“Chasing your dreams can be intimidating, but you always have to chase what makes you happy!” What is on your music vision board that you are currently working on?
Traveling to Nashville has always been an amazing experience for me musically and creatively. I like to record my songs out there, and have more writes scheduled soon. I’m planning on releasing more music soon, and I’m so excited to share upcoming projects with listeners!
And to your latest, “Let’s Go.” What’s the backstory?
I wrote this song for all go-getters out there. Whether you’re an athlete, a musician, or anyone else chasing their dreams, this one’s for you! Its meaning is let’s live, let’s savor every minute of this life and appreciate those who are in it.
