“He has no idea it’s about him, nor will he ever find out. ;)”
Introducing Sereena …
I’m from a small town in Ohio called Greenville. I was raised on a small farm out in the country. I grew up listening to Elvis Presley, ACDC and talk radio. I moved to Nashville after college to pursue a career in music. Never really believed in myself until this past year. We have been making the most amazing music that’s a melodic blend of rhythm and blues and chill pop music.
Like you I grew up in a small Midwestern town. How does the influence of growing up in Greenville come out in your music? What songs did you play with the garage bands?
Honestly, my small town where I was raised hasn’t really influenced my music. It did, however, influence me moving to Nashville. I loved country music growing up. Today, you wouldn’t be able to find a single country song in my library (not that I don’t like it, it’s just not my vibe). The garage bands I was in played a variety of different songs. I was once in this all girl 50’s band where we wore poodle skirts and saddle shoes. Another band was a tribute to all 70’s and 80’s music. I learned a lot of great music from being in those bands at such a young age.
For someone who may have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words:
Where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the process?
Well the inspiration for this song was just looking at people on Instagram.
A lot of my inspiration comes from the Bible though. I read devotions, quotes and verses and it tells me what to write about. I love it!
My favorite part of the process is coming up with the different sounds and picking out the perfect lyrics that work great with the beats.
What brings you the greatest satisfaction?
When we finish a fire song.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?
I wish I would have started writing songs at a younger age. I would be way better at it by now. This is part of my journey now though, so all worked out how it was suppose to.
What is the backstory to your last single “Vibes”?
I was just watching all the media and social media and saw how so many people were valuing the possessions they have and showing them off. I was so over it because that isn’t the secret in life that will make you happy. It’s love that makes you happy. I write in the chorus that “my soul is yearning for something more.” More than just money. More than just Fame. More than just drugs and acceptance. It’s love that my soul wants. I want people listening to want that too and see the true value in it!
Your latest, “Thinking About You,” you said you both knew there was a connection … once the song came out, have you heard from him?
He has no idea it’s about him, nor will he ever find out. ;)
How has your sound evolved with the release of this fourth single from your upcoming EP?
I went from straight pop to now a lo-fi hip-hop sound mixed with a blues influence. The rest of the songs on this upcoming EP will be more hip-hop style with mellowed out beats and chords.
Looking at the other up-and-coming guys and gals in the genre right now, who has really impressed you?
Oh there are so so many! I love Léon, Glass Animals, NAWAS, Cruel Youth, King Princess.
What song instantly puts you in a good mood?
Surround Me by Léon
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m an introvert. I get overwhelmed when I’m surrounded by people for too long. I love re-energizing in my little apartment alone.
What brings you the greatest joy?
LOVE. Being loved and giving love.
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
To be honest, the funniest thing or unexpected thing that has happened to me is that I met someone I really like. I’ve known him for months and it’s like the tides shifted out of the blue and now we’re in the middle of intense feelings for one another. It was completely unexpected and out of the blue.
What are the five things you can’t live without?
My phone, money, music, my parents, love.
What item in your closet do you wear the most?
I am always wearing crop tops, that’s for sure. I have a pair of bibs I like to wear. But to be honest, I’m at a point where I don’t like any of my clothes in my closet. I’ve worn them all out and they just bore me now. I can’t wait for summer so I can have a change of wardrobe.
What’s your motto or the advice you live by?
Always give love. Be a light.
What is your favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/ for karaoke?
I love to sing Amy Winehouse or some King Princess for sure.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing or performing?
I love photography! I love cooking and eating sushi. I love tennis and I love meeting new people and hanging out with friends and family for sure.
What’s something you wish people would ask you in an interview?
Nothing really. The fact that you’re taking the time to get to know me with these questions is humbling and more than enough!! I’m super grateful.
